Opening Thoughts:
As you all may know, there is another Terminator film scheduled to come out later this year. There’s been five Terminator films so far and out of all those five, only the first two are great. The remaining three is basically like an insult to the franchise. If you didn’t know, I’m a die hard Terminator fan and the first two films are on my top favorite films of all time list. So is this sixth film any different from Rise of The Machines, Salvation, and Genisys? Well let’s see what I liked and didn’t like just from the teaser.
What I Liked:
The first good thing I liked about this teaser is how Linda Hamiltion is reprising her role as Sarah Connor. I can see no one other than her that can play this iconic role. So seeing her in the teaser gave me the chills. The other good thing I liked is seeing James Cameron being the producer of the film. Cameron hasn’t been involved with any of the Terminator movies after Terminator 2, so seeing him being involved in this film could be a potential plus to the film. It was also great to see Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise his role as the T-800 in the teaser and Schwarzenegger has always been loyal to the franchise.
What I Didn’t Like:
The main thing that I didn’t like from the teaser is that the story (based from the teaser) did not make me too hyped for the film. The teaser showed similar elements the previous three Terminator films had and it looks like it was all used into this film (based from the teaser). It doesn’t look unique and it looked a bit mediocore. I’ve said this with the previous three Terminator movies and I’ll say it again with this one; What is the real point of making this movie? Terminator 2 ended things perfectly. It’s one of the best conclusions in cinematic history in my opinion. I really see no way how they can expand the story. Terminator 3-5 makes Terminator 2 pointless and Dark Fate has that risk to join Terminator 3-5 in that category.
The other thing that I did not like about this teaser is John Connor is not seen or even mentioned. John Connor has a huge role in Terminator 2 and seeing him not be present in the teaser raises so many questions. He did not die in Terminator 2 so if we find out he eventually died somehow as the years went by or some other stupid reason, it’s automatially going to make the movie look bad.
The other flaw that raises questions is how is the T-800 in this movie? In Terminator 2, the T-800 is terminated in the end so it really doesn’t make sense (based from the teaser) of how he is back. Even though I’m stoked to see Arnold back reprising his role, I’m also worried at the same time of how his role in this movie plays out since this is supposed to be the direct sequel to Terminator 2. Maybe it’s not the same model from Terminator 2 (taking that concept from Terminator 3 which shows another proof they are taking elements from previous films), but I’m hoping they explain these questions a little bit more when the second trailer comes out in a few months. I also hope they explain what happened to John Connor in the next trailer.
The last flaw I had with this movie is James Cameron not being the director of the film. It’s good to see him as the producer but it would’ve been potentially a lot better if he was also the director. Cameron has made so many masterpieces in his film career so the chances of this film being actually good would’ve been high. He hasn’t directed a film since Avatar which came out in 2009 and that’s a really long time. Cameron has more Avatar sequels planned but the release dates of those films has been delayed more than a couple of times. But that’s a different topic for a different post. Cameron stated this is the direct sequel to Terminator 2 but as I said earlier, how can you really make a sequel to Terminator 2?
Final Thoughts:
Even though I’m skeptical to see this film, I’ll still see this film on opening night or opening weekend since I’m a huge fan of the franchise. I always like to give movies a chance and maybe this movie might suprisingly turn out good. However, I’m going in to see the movie with low expectations.
